The BEST place ive been in Morocco is the blue city...chefchaouen..as well as being impossible to remember the spelling its unbelievably beautiful.
Bit of a schelp from Marrakesh though. I got the overnight train to Tangiers and then a 3 hour coach, which was surprisingly not filthy.

Also the hottest place I have been. 46°c in July.
If you want to escape the madness go to Essouria, still dirty and smelly but not as mental and hot.
Loved the hash over there, but gotta be careful as they love banging tourists up for possession and then fining/bribing them for release.

Dirtiest place (not rude dirty) I have ever been and I went twice. Wouldn't go back again though unless it was to stay in the mountains or see the Sahara.
You need a large pack of moist loo roll over there too unless you like using your bare hands.
I got the shits there after eating in the square, no loo roll was fun, NOT.

Just back from a private tour all morning, just us and the guide.
Was pretty good...took in all the normal sites, souk, Kasbah..palaces etc...nice morning

If you're going to eat on the main square go to number 1 stall. Woman who runs it has her staff well drilled and the food is superb.
go to places early. We had a tour guide who timed our visits to perfection so we could enjoy the likes of the Yves Saint Laurent Gardens in quiet tranquility. Every time we left there was a huge group of German tourists about to go in.
The souk is well worth a mooch, though take a ball of thread with you so you can find your way out. If you go at the end of the morning the locals are ready for lunch and/or about to go to prayer so hassle you less.
There's also a couple of good patisseries in the new town that serve some spectacular cakes and macaroons.
Have fun, it's bonkers and everyone has their hands out. Watch out for people outside your hotel telling you they've just finished work and are going home and would you like a guide. Total crap, they just lead you to their mate's shop, take their commission, bugger off and leave you to have someone try and flog their wares in the middle of nowhere.

The Hotel Africa on Marrakesh Sq was the worst "hotel" I have ever stayed in. So bad and filthy I stayed in my clothes and slept on top of the bed and left at 6am.

I went for two nights then got the hell outta there and went to Essouria.
Marrakesh square is crazy though and a must see.
Was everything I expected. Loud, colourful, smelly and full of nutters, snakes & monkeys.
